Fostering Creativity Through Extracurricular Classes

Since the start of our partnership, students and staff at Gyetighi Primary School (GPS) have worked hard to achieve academic success. Exam scores and pass rates have placed GPS in the top 5% of all primary schools in Tanzania! While this is an incredible achievement, we work to provide our students with a holistic education that keeps them motivated and inspired.

In Tanzania, only private schools offer a curriculum that includes art, dance, music, and physical education. However, most families in Tanzania cannot afford the fees of enrolling their children in such schools. We believe that all children deserve these opportunities so, over the last year, we introduced the following extracurricular classes to offer a more robust educational experience.

Art Classes: Students are partaking in painting, drawing, crafts, and more! During these classes, students work in small groups and tell stories while they explore different kinds of art. Students experiment with a variety of mediums, often using recycled materials to develop the pieces. Students are so proud of their creations and take close care of their art throughout the school day so that they can show their parents when they get home. Seeing students using their incredible imaginations to create and express themselves has been amazing!

Dance Classes: GPS students love to dance and these classes give them the opportunity to express themselves through movement! Student Teachers lead dance classes and guide students through choreographed routines. Some classes even end with friendly competitions to determine who has best mastered the steps. As you can imagine, both students and teachers enjoy having a chance to move and channel their energy before returning to their academic subjects.

Music Classes: Music classes are a favorite among students, with lessons focused on local and popular East African music. Students are introduced to new artists while learning more about the songs they know and love. Students also have the chance to work with instruments like drums and tambourines, to learn different rhythms and sounds. Knowing the powerful effect that music can have, it has been great to see students exploring so many different vocal and instrumental sounds.

All of these classes help our students improve their creativity, critical thinking, and self-esteem. As TCF continues to provide a more holistic education, we can nurture well-rounded students who will become confident future leaders of Tanzania!
