Meet Local Entrepreneur Elfrida Safari

Meet Elfrida Safari, the proud owner of a local duka that sells various dry goods such as sugar, flour, tea, soda, and coffee.

Prior to owning her duka, Elfrida was employed at a shop selling kerosene where she was left uninspired and dreamt of one day opening her own business. To turn her dreams into reality, in 2010, Elfrida joined our Rifty Economic Advancement Program (REAP) which provides local entrepreneurs with the necessary loans, business training, and resources to successfully launch and operate a small business.

Ever since taking out her first loan of $150, Elfrida has been a committed, active member of REAP. She now serves as one of our 14 trusted community-based trainers, where she guides aspiring entrepreneurs through loan repayment and best business practices. When asked for advice, Elfrida emphasized the importance of working hard, taking out loans only as you need them, and supporting your family and the community.

Today, REAP consists of over 640 members of which 65% are women. As REAP Director, Grace Christopher explains “TCF likes to empower women because we know the additional income will directly help their families.” Elfrida is no exception as the income generated from her duka has allowed her to purchase a home in Karatu for her family and send her two daughters to school. Given the limited economic opportunity within the Oldeani community, these are significant achievements worth celebrating.

TCF is inspired by the hard work of Elfrida as she continues to build a brighter future for herself and her family. By continuing to invest in local small businesses, we can empower those living in the Oldeani community to find poverty solutions that are self-sustaining.
